That’s a powerful question. And it begs to be answered. You’ve probably seen the bumper sticker or refrigerator magnet that says:

Today is the first day of the rest of your life

Yes, that’s a powerful statement of the obvious facts, but it doesn’t do much to motivate us to really do the tough business of self-inquiry. Self-inquiry is the business of asking the tough questions and drilling down into the subsurface answers until we hit pay-dirt.
In order to hit pay-dirt, we need to do something different. Let’s rephrase the quip above in a question:

What if today is the last day of your life?

It’s not so easy to pass by this prompt and go about our usual daily business. It demands we stop and think about the seriousness of the question, doesn’t it?

So, what if today is the last day of your life?

• What would you choose to do?
• Who would you call?
• Who wouldn’t get your time?
• What would you do with your day?
• How would you act toward every person you met?

How would you live life differently if today was the last day of your life?
